“A common thread in my work is my interest in how one’s personal narrative/experience can be used to speak to universal experiences. As a first generation Mexican-American, this work utilizes family photographs, Spanish language, as well as a material dialogue to explore the story of coming to the US, adopting a different culture, and experiencing firsts – first home, first grandchild, etc. The title of this piece comes from a song by Los Tigres del Norte. The song is told by the perspective of a migrant father and details his experience in the US, or as he explains, his Golden Cage.”
